Biofilm Treatment

Biofilm is a functional consortium of microorganisms attached to abiotic or biotic surfaces and embedded under the extracellular polymeric substances. Many pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms can develop biofilms on food industrial surfaces which results in food spoilage when inappropriate control and clean-up have been applied in the food industries. In recent years, this issue has risen enormously because of the increasing number of resistant strains and their ability to survive in the food industry. Therefore, it is necessary to eradicate these biofilms. The effectiveness of Realco enzymatic treatment followed by a disinfection phase can eliminate the biofilm completely.

The presence of biofilms on the premises poses a risk to food safety and cause of the contamination of the final product as they protect microorganisms like Pseudomonas, Listeria, Flavobacterium, Enterobacter or Staphylococcus, and may also cause operating problems in the equipment.

Why is Realco Biofilm Treatment more efficient?

Biofilm are 1,000 times more resistant to biocides than planktonic cells. In a biofilm, bacteria are protected by a layer of polysaccharides, a barrier that is highly resistant to traditional cleaning and disinfection solutions. To combat biofilms, Realco developed a product range made up of a specific cocktail of enzymes offering preventive and curative treatments of biofilms. The enzymatic treatment is followed by a disinfection phase to eliminate the biofilm.

  1. Biofilm Audits: A complete and precise audit of OPC and CIP installations: to reveal, locate, and quantify the presence of Biofilm.
  2. Biofilm Detection
  3. A curative treatment with BIOREM enzymatic cleaning: Complex cocktail of Enzyme is able to break down biofilm’s protective matrix.
